Origin of Theses

My final thesis project, minus two oils which have yet to be properly photographed for a grand total of twenty pieces. The final review last Tuesday went extremely well, and quick. They had a few (expected) issues with my story beats and not having turnarounds for my characters, but I received excellent marks overall. Its refreshing to be done with this and I've found a renewed capacity to look up at the sky and take a deep breath.

Its An Ogre Thing..

These are for an art test I recently completed for a company that does online fantasy games. It had certain specs for characters and props, all to be done in the company's desired style with a window of two days to complete it. This is a first for me so it was a challenge but a lot of fun.

Exteriors

A couple thesis environments of the overtaken town. I've got a handful of these semi-complete exteriors, five of which are required for the final. They need only be comps, establishing value, color, mood etc, but its hard not to get wrapped up in the detail of the alien growth. Thus my main goal now is to push the character and accuracy of the buildings underneath the growth to give it more credibility and maintain interest.

AJ and Skinner Re-Do

So finally some characters. AJ (the female) is the heroine of my thesis story, kidnapped and experimented on using alien technology which she now uses to her benefit in a plot of revenge. Likewise for the Skinner character, minus the hero and revenge parts. I like him much better now than the god-awful first attempt.

The Organism

The environment for my thesis is a depleted mining town covered in an alien growth. This is my first painted design attempt. There's definitely a nod to Beksinski with this image, and that type of bleak moody atmosphere is generally what I'm aiming for.

Newsies

I got Painter 11 in the mail yesterday and its been at least a year since I've messed with program, so I did a couple of sketches to get the feel of it again. The bottom one is a potential design for my Skinner character, but looking at it now I need to develop it beyond the SubZero/Borg look. Anytime I think about this character I always revert back to the enemies in Quake 2, so I plan on researching that more to see if its an idea to run with or avoid.

Skinner

This is a thesis character, with the idea that he was a farm hand/laborer who was captured and made into a killing machine. I'm not 100% on the design yet, but its a good first run and I used a different set of texture brushes this time.

Mad Max, Sr.

Another from my Sustained Figure class, but this time we had to reference the costume. Of course I remembered this as I was about to walk out the door that morning, so I grabbed the box of the Road Warrior/Mad Max double DVD I'd been watching the night before and ran...to the THUNDERDOME.

Figure And Digital Study

We finally started using toned paper in Sustained Figurative Concepts class, which I really like...we did two two-hour poses last time, this one the better.

Inspired by fellow artists, I also did a quick digital study from a found flickr photo.

The Captain

Using this piece to work on my sense of form and color, so I'll be refining it, among many others, for a while.

Drawing, Drawing..

The top one is from my Sustained Figurative Concepts class (all day poses) and the bottom two are from a workshop earlier in the week in which we got to draw children from life. A challenge to say the least, it was a lot fun and the kids were great.

Fight Scene And Slug Progress

These are close to being completed, minus some color and form issues. I'll also ensure better quality photos of the finished pieces.

Turn Them In, You Must

These still need work, but..
